Deity : Yhrze

God-planet Yhrze is worshipped by the Nirnaelites. It is not truly a god nor a planet, but a sentient star who made contact with them in ancient times. This being predates even Barachnelis and no one really knows Its purpose nor intentions. Yhrze sings eerily and Its strange song can be heard by those who know how to listen. Some say it almost sounds like a lullaby somehow. The cult of Yhrze is believed to have disappeared with the Midianites.

The word "yhrze" is simply a prefix to indicate a divine being in the Nirneth language. It is used because the true name of the god-planet cannot be spoken to the uninitiated.

Although being a celestial body, Yhrze lacks a centre of gravity and travels through space of Its own volition. It is a pulsar that distorts Its surroundings into nebulae of gold and emits a melancholy song. As such, riches and music are associated with It.

Yhrze craves sensations It cannot experience on Its own. Its blessing allows It to feel through Its followers. Pain, pleasure, and intense emotions are all worthy offerings to Yhrze. As a result, the Nirnaelites are tremendously debauched in order to honour their God.

Defilement : The Weeping Bride of Vent-Tremblant

The Wurdulys plague is actually a Defilement. The origin of which has long disappeared and being forgotten.

Legends, now lost, once told of a ghostly bride dancing as she wept in the cemetery of Vent-Tremblant, a village southeast of Margracier. Her name was Viola Ambrose, a Danaki from the town of Drine. She had fallen in love with a Margrace, Belphonse Laforêt. Their union was strictly forbidden.

Viola's mother, Constance, consulted with the Witch of Iracomté for a spell to make Viola forget Belphonse. Little did Constance know, the catalyst she was given for the spell was befouled. It did not cause Viola to forget, but instead killed her.

Devastated, Constance rose her back as a zombie, but Viola was never the same. She returned, not soulless, not under control, but a terrifying ghoul animated by an insatiable hunger for human flesh. For the safety of others and her own, Viola was locked away in the basement, never to be seen again.

Throughout his lifetime, Belphonse tried in vain to find his missing wife-to-be, only to die alone years later.

Constance grew old and withered, the care of Viola passed on to her other daughter, Lucille, and then her daughter, Camille, and then Camille's daughter, Agnès.

Having become pariahs in their hometown of Drine, Agnès decided to relocate the whole family far away, to the village of Vent-Tremblant, leaving the country of Mortailes for that of Exilieu. Feeling pity for the condition of Viola, a woman she had no idea who or what she truly was, not even aware that she was, in fact, her great-aunt since Viola had not aged a day since the curse.

Viola was allowed to go outside in the dark of night. She preyed upon livestock and the occasional hunter in the woods. She had been the one to suggest moving to Vent-Tremblant, for it was where Belphonse lived. Viola had not realized how many years had passed and the last of her sanity unravelled upon discovering his grave. His epitaph swearing his undying love for her.

Every night, she visited him, leaving offerings and pretending to waltz with him.

Her broken heart began to fester with the vilest of Defilement. Years kept imprisoned and starving, having to kill humans to survive, the love of her life being dead for 200 years, it was too much for her to bear. Now, unfortunately, those she attacked would be stained by her Defilement and spread it as well.

In just a few years, Vent-Tremblant became a ghost town and rumours of Wurdulys began to abound far and wide.

Cryptid : Wurdulys

Pronounced "voor-duh-liss", the name is derived from Margrançois : Vautour du Lys (vultures of the lily) a term once used to describe those who profaned graves. Vultures being viewed as an ill omen, guardians of death and decay, and lilies being funereal flowers placed over tombstones in Margrace culture.

Today, the word Wurdulys refers to many sorts of supernatural apparitions, from ghosts to revenants. Although no one can truly confirm their existence, most people believe them to be real. Many different theories abound regarding their origins and appearance, but there are many common features to such speculations : they fear daylight, fire is the only way to eliminate them, and a person will turn into a Wurdulys if they are bitten by one.

The abandoned village of Vent-Tremblant is believed to be where they congregate.

Cryptid : Revenant

Concerning reports speak of zombies shambling about without a necromancer. The undead cannot function by themselves. They have to be risen from the grave via necromancy and tended to. Without a necromancer, a zombie cannot exist.

Yet, deep within the jungles of Mortailes, some claim to have witnessed the dead walking seemingly of their own volition. Worse still, some believe they may actually be animated by La Blessure, a terrible Defilement. If correct, this means that those creatures can spread the curse wherever they go and pose a great threat to the world.

No sightings have been confirmed, but the claim of uncontrolled zombies is being taken very seriously and is currently under investigation.

Location : Great Volcano Gürvel, Ghyalkhii, Ghaur
Status : Active

The dragon demigoddess Helena was a great adversary during the Bantak Civil War. Summoned into the world by the warlock Sartaq Nügelten, along with her husband, the dragon Helvete.

After a tremendous battle, both Sartaq and Helvete were slain by Mengur, the Bantak hero. Helena managed to flee, but her wings were ruined. She retreated into the crater of Gurvel, Eler's largest volcano and one of the Anomalies.

Within her burning fortress, she is untouchable. As such, she has never come out again. Using the Anomaly's powers, she can spawn via parthenogenesis. Her children now plague the skies of Ghaur.

Being the only demon with a demigod status left in the world, she is highly sought after by warlocks for her wise councils. Yet, only those who dare to brave the flames may be granted audience.

Yilan Dancing

One of the prides of the Auriel people are the yilan, dancers believed to be human incarnations of cobras. They perform a unique type of dance said to beguile onlookers. The dance is believed to not be learned, but innate. If one needs to learn it, they are not a real yilan. The phenomenon has never been properly explained, but most people would rather believe it's simply a combination of talent, charisma, and being double-jointed. In reality, no amount of training could achieve the inhuman contortions of a true yilan.

As such, they are extremely rare. Most of which are female. A male yilan is said to be a nigh legendary sight. Others say they do not even exist.

Some might have the ability without even realizing it. Their rarity is such that many dancers will pretend to be one, fooling the public. Only those who have ever witnessed the real thing would be able to tell the difference. Due to yilan dancers being so few, many terrifying rumours circulate about them. People say they can turn into a cobra at will. That the mere touch of their skin is poisonous enough to kill. That they can hypnotize with their stare. That their enchanting beauty has caused the ruin of empires.

These are, of course, only rumours. Although the one about poisonous skin one could stem from Auriels' blood being highly toxic. But many yilan, be they real or faking, will play into these beliefs, especially to avoid being touched by their public. False yilan will often perform a much more sultry and seductive dance, but will not want hands laid upon them.

A real dance will often intimidate onlookers. The movements, while graceful, seem contorted for a human body to twist into, being reminiscent of a snake. Real yilan all have otherworldly eyes with which they will stare at their public without ever blinking during the entire performance. Fake yilan will either wear contact lenses or cover their faces with a mask to hide their lie.

Real yilan, as well as particularly talented fake ones, get spotted in their youth and will perform in royal courts and fancy venues. That is unless they are kidnapped and sold to barbarian warlords as an exotic addition to their harems. They command a high price and, as such, many people will never get to see one in their entire life. The dance is often made into a show with a pungi player, the traditional snake charming flute of the Auriels, in which the player and dancer will pretend to have a fight for dominance.

While yilan dancing is exclusively associated with the Auriels and it is believed that only Auriels can be born as a yilan, they do occur in other races as well. The dance is forbidden by Bantaks as it is linked with demonic possession due to the serpentine qualities of it. The Margraces view it as utterly debauched and lewd and such performances will be hidden in brothels or illicit clubs.

It is very popular amongst the snake-worshipping Danakis where most prolific yilan, real or fake, will often become dance teachers, further propagating the art. However, they do incorporate vastly different movements into their performance. Therefore a Danaki yilan dance won't look at all like an Auriel one.

Since most Auriels look down upon the other races, they would never consider them to be real yilan.

Famed Auriel explorer Aaron Mordecan disappeared on his travel towards the Great Weaver's Needle. While his journal was found, the sole source of knowledge of the Needle up close, Aaron's body was never discovered.

However, some who have also ventured close to the Anomaly report seeing a strange, refracted image that resembles the renowned explorer who's been missing for centuries.

Could it be a mirage? A hallucination? Or something far more sinister?

Harbinger : Sleeper of Khökhsüns

Origin : Helen (presumed)
Location : Melancholy Ocean, Ganereg, Ghaur
Status : Inactive

Little is known about the immense iceberg floating off the western shores of Ghaur. The unmelting ice of an eerie, lightly glowing blue. A frozen being, nicknamed The Sleeper, can be glimpsed within.

The creature is assumed to be of demonic origins, although no one can confirm this theory. The iceberg is considered an Anomaly due to it being impervious to outside influences. Heat will not melt it. Picks will not chip it. No one knows if it is indeed an Anomaly or simply the influence of The Sleeper itself or perhaps the ice was enchanted to be its prison for eternity.

In ages past, many attempts at extricating The Sleeper from within had been made. All have failed. Due to how remote the glacier is, it has being forgotten for the most part. Few have travelled to see it with their own eyes. People live on, unconcerned with what may lie beneath the ice. After all, there are far more interesting phenomenons to be observed on Eler.

Anomaly vs Defilement

 ANOMALY

  • Comes from extraterrestrial or extradimensional source.
  • Cannot be cleansed.
  • Does not always affect those around it.
  • Not always negative or malevolent.

An Anomaly is the result of outside influence, be it something fallen from the cosmos or a breach between dimensions. Anomalies are studied and classified into three categories depending on the danger they represent : benign, parlous, or lethal.

Benign Anomalies are completely harmless. Long gone is their influence or perhaps they never had any to begin with. They simply are a bit odd, a novelty in nature, yet not worthy of much attention. They largely go undocumented. Some strange, perfectly natural occurrences are sometimes mistakenly labelled as Anomalies.

The most common Anomalies are the ones classified as parlous. They are generally not too dangerous if some safety measures are followed. In fact, many serve as tourist attractions. As long as one respects the rules and railings of the area, there should be no incidents. A parlous Anomaly does have some influence over its surroundings, but it's one that takes centuries to truly settle in. Spending a few days camping nearby will have no ill effect on the human mind or body. The danger lies within nature itself. If one is careless and falls into a boiling hot spring, whether it's a normal one or an Anomaly, the end result will be the same. Some of the most famous parlous Anomalies include : the Crater of Iracomté in Hautemort, the volcano Gürvel in Gyalkhii, and the Eye of Odalis in Valakis. Only the volcano is not a tourist attraction, simply due to the fact that the surrounding land is infested with dragons.

The Anomalies classified as lethal are those that generate potent eldritch radiation in the surrounding area. They cannot be safely approached and twist the world in incomprehensible ways. They may not instantly kill someone who comes within their exclusion zone, but are known to induce madness, hallucinations, and even warp the body. Unfortunately, due to such dangerous influences, the surrounding areas are seldom indicated and never guarded. As a result, it is quite difficult to gauge whether one is too close or not. Fortunately, this level of danger is extremely rare. Only two areas have received the classification of lethal : Éméris in Le Havre and the Great Weaver's Needle in Zürkhalakh.

DEFILEMENT

  • Man-made.
  • Can be cleansed.
  • Instantly taints those who enter it.
  • Always harmful.

A Defilement was the scene of a terrible blasphemy. A crime so vile it cursed the surrounding area . It can be a house, part of a street, the middle of the woods, any area where horrors might be committed. The very air is befouled by sin. The vast majority of the time, it is impossible to tell if an area has been defiled without stepping into it. Those who enter the Defilement will be tainted. This affliction can range from misfortunes to death, depending on how bad the Defilement is.

A Defilement can be caused willingly, such as by act of murder or suicide. Sometimes, it can be an accident, like a house fire. Certain traumatic events can create a Defilement, like miscarriage or rape. The victim may be tainted and unwittingly spread the affliction to all those they come in contact with.

Every race on Eler has their own way of dealing with and cleansing Defilement. Some, unfortunately, are so thick with spiritual miasma and rot that they simply cannot be dealt with. Passing years weaken a Defilement. As such, some areas that cannot be currently cleansed are sealed off for the time being.

Defilement are often small, undocumented, and insidious. The only largely known Defilement is La Blessure (The Wound) in Mortailes, Almer. It is the site of Ménandu's murder. The curse there is so great that nature itself bleeds and rots. Even 4000 years later, it is still impossible to cleanse. Death instantly strikes those who come too close.

Unbeknownst to most, the greatest Defilement of all lies in the forgotten lands of Quris, where the very flesh of Eler lies open, a gaping, festering wound corrupting its ruined heart. It is also the only Defilement that spreads. Slowly but surely, it shall consume everything.

03 November 2022

Population

Even though Eler is a rather small planet, it is far from heavily populated. Only an estimated 4 millions people call it their home. Many areas are hostile to human life, from oceans to deserts to defiled terrains, population can be quite scarce in some parts.

The ten largest population centres on Eler are:

Sarna, Zardunel
Capital of Valakis
520 000 people

Delkhiin, Ghaur
Capital of Luu'süm
480 000 people

Dan, Almer
Capital of Mortailes
410 000 people

Khaanyambar, Ghaur
Capital of Tostolbo
370 000 people

Beaumanoir, Almer
Capital of Hautemort
350 000 people

Ras Harmah, Zardunel
Capital of Alizarnon
330 000 people

Piriltine, Zardunel
Capital of Jeddah
290 000 people

Giskhöt, Ghaur
Capital of Ganereg
210 000 people

Saint-Aldène-sur-Mer
Coastal city in Exilieu
170 000 people

Margracier, Almer
Capital of Exilieu
120 000 people

Other large cities have around 100 000 inhabitants or less. Most towns have a population below 50 000. There are numerous villages scattered around that less than 10 000 people call home. Some secluded areas, such as territories in the far reaches of Iracomté in Almer or Khüsner in Ghaur, lack a proper census.
